Coventry City have been encouraged to push ahead with a potential transfer move involving Leeds United, with club owner Doug King tipped to complete what could be described as a remarkable deal. Manager Frank Lampard is expected to play a key role in shaping the squad ahead of a likely return to the top flight.
Despite being held to a goalless draw by Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry have effectively secured promotion to the Premier League. The Sky Blues currently enjoy a commanding lead—10 points ahead of Ipswich Town in second place and 12 clear of Millwall in third—with only four matches left in the EFL Championship season. Their significantly stronger goal difference further strengthens their position, particularly as Millwall also dropped points in a stalemate against West Bromwich Albion.
With promotion all but confirmed, attention is already shifting toward squad reinforcements. Lampard will soon need to identify and recruit players capable of helping Coventry remain competitive in the Premier League.
One name that has emerged as a potential target is Ao Tanaka, a midfielder currently at Leeds. Last summer, Leeds made several strategic signings to boost their chances of survival in the top flight—an approach Coventry may aim to replicate. However, those additions have also limited opportunities for some players who were instrumental in Leeds’ previous promotion campaign.
Tanaka, for instance, was a key figure under Daniel Farke last season, starting 37 matches. Yet, in the Premier League, his involvement has been minimal, with fewer than 10 starts likely by the end of the current campaign. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Japanese international is open to leaving Leeds in search of more consistent playing time.
A Coventry supporter and pundit, Chris Deez, has strongly backed a move for Tanaka. He praised the midfielder’s technical ability and suitability for Coventry’s needs, especially considering his estimated transfer value of £10–15 million—likely within the club’s budget for multiple signings. Deez suggested that several current squad members may not be capable of stepping up to Premier League level, pointing to a recent underwhelming performance against Sheffield Wednesday as evidence.
He further highlighted Tanaka’s importance in Leeds’ promotion push last season, describing him as a player who may excel in the Championship but has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League. Nevertheless, Deez believes Tanaka would fit well at Coventry, offering strong competition to midfielders Matt Grimes and Frank Onyeka—both of whom have been standout performers.
Deez also emphasized the importance of squad rotation, noting that players like Grimes cannot be expected to maintain the same intensity across a full Premier League season. Tanaka’s experience and versatility could therefore prove valuable, even if he initially rotates into the team.
At 27 years old, Tanaka is approaching a critical stage in his career, making regular playing time even more important. This season, he has largely been limited to cup appearances at Leeds, a situation many feel does not reflect his true ability.
A move to Coventry could offer him the opportunity to remain in the Premier League while gaining more consistent minutes. Although interest from German side SC Freiburg has been reported, staying in England’s top division may be more appealing for the midfielder.
Ultimately, Coventry could provide Tanaka with the platform he needs to revive his top-flight career, while also strengthening their squad for the challenges ahead.
