Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has provided an encouraging update regarding ongoing contract discussions with two of the club’s key players, Jan Paul van Hecke and Kaoru Mitoma. According to Hurzeler, negotiations remain positive as the club works toward securing the futures of both players.
At the conclusion of the current season, Van Hecke and Mitoma will each have just one year left on their existing contracts. That makes the upcoming summer transfer window especially significant, as it could determine whether they commit their long-term futures to Brighton or explore opportunities elsewhere.
Mitoma, now 28, has displayed flashes of the high-quality form that made him one of Brighton’s standout performers in previous campaigns. One of the highlights of his season came recently when he scored an impressive goal against Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday. However, recurring fitness concerns and inconsistent form have limited his ability to perform at his best regularly throughout the season.
During the match against Tottenham, Mitoma experienced cramp in the closing stages, raising some concerns about his availability. However, Hurzeler has reassured supporters that the Japanese winger is expected to be fit and ready for Brighton’s upcoming clash against Chelsea FC at the Amex Stadium.
Meanwhile, Van Hecke, 25, has continued to establish himself as one of Brighton’s most dependable players. The Dutch defender has been highly consistent in defence and has elevated his performances even further this season. His leadership qualities and reliability have led Hurzeler to suggest that he could become a future captain of the club.
Because of his impressive displays, Van Hecke has also attracted interest from several top Premier League sides. Reports have linked him with possible summer moves to Newcastle United, Tottenham, and Chelsea, while Liverpool FC had previously also been mentioned as admirers.
When asked about the current status of the negotiations, Hurzeler said discussions are still moving in a positive direction. He emphasized that while talks continue, both players remain fully focused on matters that are most important to the club.
He also praised their professionalism and commitment, stating that both players consistently give their all in training sessions and matches. According to the Brighton boss, their dedication to the team is clear in every performance they deliver.
Speaking specifically about Mitoma’s condition ahead of the Chelsea match, Hurzeler explained that the winger only suffered minor cramp issues. He said Mitoma had felt a slight discomfort during the warm-up but still made an effective impact during his short time on the pitch.
The manager added that he was pleased with Mitoma’s contribution, highlighting his goal, attacking involvement, and role in helping Brighton regain momentum in the game. He concluded by confirming that Mitoma’s issue was minor and that he should be available for selection against Chelsea.
