Derby County have stepped up their summer recruitment by opening discussions over a deal for FC Basel attacker Philip Otele, who is also attracting interest from fellow Championship side Birmingham City.
John Eustace is eager to strengthen his attacking options after the Rams narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, and Otele has emerged as a key target. The versatile Nigerian international is capable of playing on the left wing or through the middle, offering Derby added flexibility in the final third.
When Basel signed the 27-year-old, sporting director Daniel Stucki praised his pace, physicality and attacking qualities, describing him as an explosive player capable of making a significant impact. Those attributes have since been reflected in his performances, with Otele scoring 18 goals and providing eight assists in 55 appearances for the Swiss club.
After spending last season on loan at Hamburg, where the German club chose not to trigger a permanent deal, Otele is expected to leave Basel before the transfer window closes. Reports indicate that Derby have already opened talks over a move, although they are unlikely to have a clear run at the forward.
Italian clubs Lecce and Frosinone are monitoring his situation, while Birmingham City are also believed to be in the race. Basel are reportedly seeking around €5 million (£4.3 million) for the Nigerian, meaning Derby will need to fend off strong competition if they hope to bring him to Pride Park.
Meanwhile, Derby continue to await further developments regarding the proposed investment involving Turki Alalshikh. Although speculation surrounding the club’s ownership continues, Eustace has made it clear that his priority remains preparing his squad for the new campaign, with full attention currently on the upcoming EFL Cup clash against Lincoln City.
