Brighton Set to Part Ways with £50m Midfield and Attacking Duo After Unsuccessful Spells
Brighton & Hove Albion are expected to sanction the departures of Brajan Gruda and Matt O’Riley during the current summer transfer window, bringing an end to the duo’s disappointing spells at the Amex Stadium after the club invested a combined £50 million to secure their services.
Gruda Closing In on Bundesliga Return
Brajan Gruda appears to be heading back to Germany after struggling to establish himself in the Premier League. The 23-year-old winger spent the second half of last season on loan at RB Leipzig, where he rediscovered some of the form that had convinced Brighton to sign him.
Reports indicate that Brighton and Leipzig have reached an agreement for another loan deal, with an option—or potentially an obligation—to make the transfer permanent if certain performance-related conditions are met.
Gruda joined Brighton from Mainz in 2024 for approximately £25 million and was viewed as one of Germany’s brightest young attacking talents. During his time with the Seagulls, he made 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing eight assists.
Although he occasionally displayed flashes of creativity and technical quality, whether operating as a central attacking midfielder or on the right wing, he was unable to consistently influence games or cement a regular place in the starting lineup. His loan spell at Leipzig proved far more encouraging, as he contributed three goals and three assists in just eight starts, making a return to the Bundesliga appear to be the best solution for both the player and the club.
Leipzig’s qualification for this season’s UEFA Champions League after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga also offers Gruda the opportunity to compete at the highest level of European football while continuing his development.
O’Riley Also Expected to Leave
Matt O’Riley is another player widely expected to depart Brighton this summer after failing to make the desired impact following his move from Celtic.
The Danish international, who also cost Brighton around £25 million, was among several major signings during the club’s ambitious £200 million recruitment drive in 2024. However, his time on the south coast never truly gathered momentum.
O’Riley spent part of last season on loan at Marseille, where his performances were generally well received. His displays initially sparked speculation that the French club would pursue a permanent transfer, but negotiations failed to produce an agreement, resulting in his return to Brighton in January.
Despite rejoining the squad, O’Riley struggled for regular playing time under head coach Fabian Hurzeler and rarely featured in the first team during the remainder of the campaign.
Although he has been involved in Brighton’s pre-season preparations and remains under contract until June 2029, there is growing expectation that he will secure a move elsewhere before the transfer window closes. Italian clubs Roma and Juventus have previously been linked with the midfielder, while Atalanta also showed interest before his original move to Brighton.
Brighton will be hoping to recover a significant portion of the £25 million they invested in O’Riley should a permanent transfer materialise.
Why Neither Player Was Able to Succeed
Several factors contributed to the difficulties experienced by both Gruda and O’Riley during their time at Brighton.
Competition for attacking positions was exceptionally strong, particularly in the No. 10 role and on the right wing. Players such as Jack Hinshelwood and Georginio became the preferred options in attacking midfield, while Yankuba Minteh quickly established himself as the first-choice right winger following his £30 million arrival from Newcastle United.
Minteh’s pace, athleticism and direct style of play appear to fit Fabian Hurzeler’s tactical philosophy more closely, and the Brighton manager never seemed entirely convinced by the contributions of either Gruda or O’Riley.
In addition to the intense competition for places, both players endured recurring injury problems that disrupted their rhythm and prevented them from building the consistency required to earn regular opportunities in the starting eleven.
Opportunities for Brighton’s Emerging Talents
Should both departures be completed, Brighton will create valuable space within the first-team squad for several promising young players. Highly rated prospects Harry Howell, Amario Cozier-Duberry and Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna could all benefit from increased opportunities as the club continues its tradition of promoting emerging talent.
While there is a sense of disappointment that neither Gruda nor O’Riley managed to fulfil the promise they showed before arriving at Brighton, their expected exits appear to represent the right decision for all parties. With both players attracting interest elsewhere, the Seagulls will also be encouraged by the prospect of recovering much of the £50 million they spent on the pair just two years ago.
