Celtic set to launch formal bid to sign their best striker since Kyogo

Celtic edged past Hearts on the final day of the season to secure the Scottish Premiership title in dramatic fashion, sealing the win in controversial style and retaining their crown.

With the trophy safely back at Celtic Park, attention now turns to strengthening the squad so they can defend it again next season. Manager Martin O’Neill believes the club’s success must continue, with a priority placed on signing a reliable, clinical striker this summer.

One of Celtic’s main issues last season was in attack. After Kyogo Furuhashi left earlier in the campaign, Daizen Maeda was moved out of his natural position, which disrupted his effectiveness. Although he eventually rediscovered form toward the end of the season at a crucial moment, the club cannot depend on him as their main striker moving forward—either he needs support up front or a return to his wider role.

Celtic have already been linked with several attacking targets, including Tairyk Arconte and FC Aarau forward Elias Filet. Reports suggest they are preparing a formal bid for Filet after holding talks with his representatives. The Swiss club are expected to demand around €600,000 (£520,000), a fee Celtic can comfortably afford.

However, there are questions about whether Filet can adapt quickly from Switzerland’s second division to the demands of the Scottish Premiership. Despite the risk, Celtic have a history of successful signings from less familiar markets, such as Kyogo Furuhashi, who went on to score 85 goals in 165 appearances before departing in 2025.

If the move works out, Celtic hope the new signing could boost their attack, revive Maeda’s form, and help them stay ahead of rivals like Hearts and Rangers in the title race once again.
