Coventry City supporters may already be turning their attention toward next season, even though there are still matches left in their 2025/26 Championship campaign. Under the management of Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues have enjoyed an excellent season and are strong favourites to secure the Championship title and earn promotion to the Premier League.
Several players have played key roles in this success, including Haji Wright, Matt Grimes, and Carl Rushworth, all of whom have contributed significantly to the team’s strong performances throughout the campaign.
With promotion likely, attention is already shifting toward recruitment for the Premier League. Reports from talkSPORT suggest Coventry are considering a loan move for Jesse Derry, a promising young forward from Chelsea. Derry has impressed at youth level with Chelsea’s Under-21 side and has even earned a senior appearance this season, coming on in an FA Cup match against Hull City.
However, it is still unclear whether Derry is Coventry’s primary target, as the club is expected to evaluate multiple options in preparation for the step up to top-flight football and the increased challenge of survival in the Premier League.
Another potential loan target being discussed is Manchester United’s highly rated winger Shea Lacey. Lacey is regarded as one of United’s most exciting academy talents and is expected to benefit from regular senior football in the near future.
Although he has already made a few senior appearances for Manchester United—including a difficult outing in which he was sent off against Brighton & Hove Albion—his performances at youth level have been outstanding. This season, he has scored 10 goals and provided 4 assists in 15 appearances for the Under-21 side, highlighting his attacking threat and development.
Lacey is known for his direct playing style, pace, and close control, which make him a constant problem for defenders when driving forward with the ball. These qualities suggest he could adapt well to senior football if given consistent opportunities.
From Coventry’s perspective, the club will need to strengthen its squad depth ahead of a Premier League campaign. While right-wing is already a competitive position—featuring players such as Brandon Thomas-Asante and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto—adding another dynamic option could still be valuable, especially if squad rotation becomes necessary at a higher level.
If Lacey were to join on loan, it could also positively impact Coventry’s attacking duo of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, who rely heavily on quality service from wide areas. Both forwards have been crucial to Coventry’s recent success and will be important figures as the club aims to establish itself in the Premier League.
