Derby County hit Norwich City transfer bullseye and left Leeds United jealous

When Paul Clement replaced Steve McClaren as Derby County manager, it marked his first opportunity in the top job after serving as an assistant at clubs such as Real Madrid, PSG and Chelsea.

Derby strengthened heavily that summer, bringing in players including Darren Bent, Jacob Butterfield and Andreas Weimann, but it was one signing from Norwich City who truly stood out.

On transfer deadline day, the Rams completed a club-record £6 million deal for Bradley Johnson. The midfielder arrived after an outstanding campaign at Carrow Road, where he played a key role in Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League. Johnson scored 15 goals, added two assists and was crowned the club’s Player of the Year.

Despite Norwich’s return to the top flight, Johnson found himself mostly used from the bench during the opening weeks of the season, paving the way for Derby to make their move.

In his debut season at Pride Park, Johnson registered five goals and two assists. While those numbers did not quite match his previous campaign, he became a crucial figure in Derby’s run to the Championship play-off semi-finals.

Widely regarded as Derby’s best signing of that transfer window, Johnson earned praise for his leadership, versatility and physical presence in midfield. Although promotion to the Premier League ultimately eluded the Rams, he remained an influential figure during one of the club’s strongest Championship periods, making 140 appearances in total.

Before joining Norwich, Johnson had left Leeds United on a free transfer in 2011 after making 140 appearances for the club. At just 24 years old, he was still approaching the peak years of his career.

Leeds were left disappointed after failing to agree a new contract with the midfielder, eventually placing him on the transfer list following the rejection of their final offer. His departure for Premier League-bound Norwich without a transfer fee was viewed by many as a major blow for the Whites.

Johnson had been an important part of Leeds’ rebuilding phase, starring regularly in League One before carrying that form into the Championship during the 2010/11 campaign, where he missed only one league match all season.
