Millwall are on the verge of completing the signing of highly-rated Belgian midfielder Mathis Servais, with the Championship club reportedly agreeing a transfer fee worth more than €3 million. The 21-year-old is now expected to undergo a medical before officially becoming the club’s third signing of the summer transfer window.

Following another campaign in which they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League, Millwall have wasted little time strengthening their squad. Manager Alex Neil has received strong backing from the club’s hierarchy, with the arrivals of Jenson Metcalfe and Tairyk Arconte already adding depth ahead of the new season. The imminent signing of Servais further highlights the club’s ambition to build a squad capable of mounting another serious promotion challenge.

According to reporter Dan Marsh, Millwall have reached an agreement with Belgian Pro League side KV Mechelen for Servais, with the transfer fee exceeding €3 million. Earlier reports suggested the move could represent one of the highest transfer fees in Millwall’s history, underlining just how highly the club rates the young midfielder. Servais is also expected to sign a long-term five-year contract once he successfully completes his medical examinations.

The Belgian joined KV Mechelen only last summer after leaving SK Beveren in a deal worth just over £1 million. Despite spending only one season with Mechelen, he quickly established himself as an important member of the squad. During the 2024/25 campaign, Servais registered three goals and four assists across all competitions while consistently impressing with his technical ability, work rate, and creativity.

A product of Club Brugge’s renowned youth academy, Servais continued his development during two productive seasons at SK Beveren before earning his move to Mechelen. His steady progress has seen him develop into one of Belgium’s promising young midfielders, attracting attention from clubs outside his home country.

Although naturally a central midfielder, Servais is valued for his versatility and tactical flexibility. He is capable of operating in several midfield roles and can also play on the left side when required, giving managers multiple tactical options. His intelligence on the ball, ability to create chances, and willingness to contribute both offensively and defensively have made him an influential player throughout his early career.

Last season, Servais featured in all 32 league matches for KV Mechelen, starting every game and demonstrating his importance to the team. Throughout the campaign, he created 35 scoring opportunities for teammates, highlighting his creative qualities and vision in possession. His performances also helped Mechelen secure a fifth-place finish in the Belgian Pro League’s regular season.

On the international stage, Servais has become a regular member of Belgium’s Under-21 national team. Despite being only 21 years old, he has already accumulated more than 8,000 minutes of senior football since making his first-team debut five years ago, showcasing both his consistency and experience at a relatively young age.

Across his senior club career in Belgium, Servais has made 121 appearances, scoring 16 goals while providing 17 assists. Those numbers reflect his growing influence as an attacking midfielder capable of contributing regularly in the final third.

Millwall’s transfer business is unlikely to end with the arrival of Servais. Following Billy Mitchell’s departure, the club moved swiftly to strengthen its midfield by signing Jenson Metcalfe, but further additions are still expected before the transfer window closes.

Replacing outgoing players, including Thierno Ballo, remains a key objective for the recruitment team. Defensive reinforcements are also believed to be under consideration, although improving the club’s attacking options appears to be the primary focus.

Femi Azeez was widely regarded as Millwall’s most effective attacking player last season, providing creativity, pace, and goals from wide areas. The club will be hoping to recruit another player capable of offering similar quality on the opposite flank to create a more balanced and dangerous attacking unit.

Millwall have consistently remained among the Championship’s play-off contenders in recent seasons, with last year’s campaign arguably representing their strongest opportunity yet to secure promotion. By investing significantly in young talent such as Mathis Servais, the Lions are signalling their determination to build on that progress and take the final step towards earning a place in the Premier League.
