Jacob Farrell appears increasingly likely to leave Portsmouth, bringing a frustrating 18-month spell at Fratton Park closer to an end. The defender has managed only three senior appearances for Pompey during that period, with injuries severely limiting his opportunities.

Despite the English transfer window now being closed, Farrell is still on course to exit the club. Activity at Fratton Park intensified as the deadline approached, with Portsmouth welcoming several new signings while also confirming a pair of departures.

Jacob Brown, Gustavo Caballero and Madiodio Dia were all added to John Mousinho’s squad late in the window, joining earlier arrivals Millenic Alli, Ebou Adams, Keshi Anderson and Aji Alese. At the same time, Tom McIntyre left the club after his contract was mutually terminated, while Callum Lang completed a move to Preston North End for a club-record transfer fee.

However, Pompey’s outgoing business may not be finished. Farrell is progressing towards a temporary return to Australia, with a loan move to the A-League now gathering momentum. The News understands discussions were reaching an advanced stage late on Monday evening, with head coach John Mousinho approving the defender’s departure.

Reports from Australia have identified Western Sydney Wanderers as Farrell’s likely destination, with the 24-year-old expected to join the club on loan. While the English window has closed, the Australian transfer window remains open until February 10, leaving the door open for the deal to be finalised.

Interest in Farrell has been widespread over the past month, with clubs from League One, the Scottish Premiership, Australia and Denmark all monitoring his situation. The left-back only recently returned to action after a spell on the sidelines, making a brief 17-minute appearance against Watford in late January.

Mousinho had initially wanted to assess how the latter stages of the transfer window unfolded before deciding on Farrell’s future, but a temporary move now looks increasingly likely. Injuries have restricted the defender to just two appearances in all competitions this season, further compounding a stop-start stay on the south coast.

Speaking in late January, Mousinho explained his careful approach, balancing the need to protect squad depth with the importance of Farrell’s long-term development. With two-and-a-half years still remaining on his contract, the club is keen not to stall the progress of a player they continue to value.

The Pompey boss highlighted that Farrell’s appearance against Watford was his first league outing since September 2024, underlining how much football he has missed. Mousinho admitted the defender had come close to featuring in matches against Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton and praised his performance upon returning.

While there remains a possibility Farrell could yet play a role for Portsmouth during the remainder of the season, Mousinho acknowledged the uncertainty created by long-term injuries and the increasing intensity of the league. Nevertheless, he stressed his belief in Farrell’s ability, pointing to strong performances in the past and expressing hope that the player now feels trusted to perform in high-pressure situations.

For now, all signs suggest Farrell’s next step will be away from Fratton Park, with a loan move offering him the chance to gain much-needed minutes and rebuild momentum after a challenging period.
