Coventry City’s Ross Barkley Pursuit Faces Fresh Setback as Aston Villa Consider Keeping Midfielder
Coventry City’s hopes of signing Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley this summer have suffered a significant setback, with the Premier League club now reportedly reconsidering his future. Despite earlier indications that Barkley could leave Villa Park in search of more regular football, recent developments suggest manager Unai Emery is keen to convince the experienced midfielder to remain part of his squad for the upcoming campaign.
Barkley, 32, has spent the last two seasons at Aston Villa in a largely supporting role. While he featured regularly across all competitions, opportunities in the Premier League were limited, with just ten starts complemented by 31 substitute appearances. The lack of consistent starts has fuelled speculation that the former England international is eager to secure a move where he can enjoy a more prominent role and regular first-team football.
Coventry City have been among the clubs most strongly linked with Barkley throughout the transfer window. The Sky Blues’ interest is far from surprising given the close relationship between the midfielder and Coventry head coach Frank Lampard. The pair previously worked together during Lampard’s spell as Chelsea manager, and the former England boss is believed to value Barkley’s experience, creativity, and leadership qualities as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.
The speculation surrounding a potential move intensified when Barkley was spotted at Coventry City’s pre-season training camp in Marbella, Spain. Although the midfielder was reportedly there to work with his personal fitness trainer rather than train with the Championship side, his presence inevitably sparked fresh rumours that negotiations were progressing behind the scenes.
However, transfer expert Alan Nixon has revealed that discussions have encountered difficulties. According to Nixon, both Coventry City and Fulham have expressed interest in signing Barkley and have held talks over a potential deal. Nevertheless, neither club has managed to agree to the financial terms required to complete the transfer, leaving negotiations at a standstill.
Nixon also claims Aston Villa’s stance has begun to change. Rather than allowing Barkley to depart, Villa are now considering keeping the midfielder as part of Emery’s plans. The Spanish coach is understood to be a strong admirer of Barkley’s professionalism and influence within the dressing room, viewing him as a dependable and experienced option capable of making valuable contributions throughout a demanding season.
If Villa ultimately decide to retain Barkley, it would represent a notable blow to Coventry City’s transfer ambitions. Lampard had reportedly identified the former Everton and Chelsea midfielder as an ideal addition to bolster his midfield with proven Premier League quality and international experience.
Barkley remains under contract at Aston Villa until the summer of 2027 after joining the club from Luton Town in July 2024. With his future still unresolved, Coventry and Fulham may have to either improve their offers or turn their attention to alternative targets should Villa succeed in persuading the midfielder to stay.
