Liam Delap to Brighton could be the ideal solution if Danny Welbeck departs – opinion
Brighton & Hove Albion could soon be facing another difficult transfer situation as speculation continues to grow over Danny Welbeck’s future. The experienced striker has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea, and if the Seagulls eventually lose one of their most influential figures, they should push to bring Liam Delap to the Amex Stadium as part of the solution.
Chelsea have frequently turned to Brighton when strengthening their squad over recent years, signing players, coaches and senior staff in deals worth hundreds of millions of pounds. Now, the London club could once again be looking towards the south coast, this time with veteran striker Danny Welbeck reportedly on their radar as manager Xabi Alonso seeks to add leadership and experience to his youthful squad.
Welbeck, who joined Brighton on a free transfer from Watford in 2020, has become one of the club’s most dependable performers despite arriving after an injury-plagued spell. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward enjoyed arguably the finest Premier League season of his career last campaign, scoring 13 league goals while consistently delivering important performances for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.
However, Welbeck’s value to Brighton stretches far beyond his goals. He has established himself as one of the dressing room’s most respected leaders, providing guidance for the club’s growing collection of talented young players arriving from across Europe and beyond. His professionalism, experience and winning mentality have made him a vital figure behind the scenes, qualities that would understandably appeal to Chelsea as they continue reshaping their squad.
Over the past few seasons, Chelsea’s recruitment strategy has often mirrored Brighton’s model. Under Todd Boehly’s ownership, the Blues have spent well over £300 million on Brighton-related appointments, including players, coaches and members of the club’s recruitment structure.
While Brighton supporters have understandably grown frustrated at seeing key figures leave for Stamford Bridge, the club has also benefited financially. The substantial transfer income has allowed Albion to continually reinvest in the playing squad while also supporting major infrastructure developments, including improvements to the Amex Stadium, the state-of-the-art Lancing training complex and the construction of a new stadium for the women’s team.
Despite those positives, losing Welbeck would feel different.
The 35-year-old has become a genuine fan favourite, and watching such an admired figure move directly to Chelsea would be particularly difficult for many supporters. Although Brighton have already seen stars such as Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Joao Pedro head to west London, Welbeck’s departure would carry greater emotional weight because of his influence both on and off the pitch.
If Brighton are forced to accept his exit, however, they should attempt to ensure the transfer benefits them in return.
One possible option would be Liam Delap.
The young striker endured a frustrating campaign at Chelsea and struggled to establish himself, but there remains little doubt about his long-term potential. Before injuries interrupted his progress, Delap was widely regarded as one of England’s brightest young attacking prospects after progressing through Manchester City’s academy and gaining valuable Premier League experience with Ipswich Town.
At just 23 years old, he still possesses significant room for development, and Brighton have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to revive careers and maximise young talent.
Even a season-long loan could prove an excellent piece of business.
Brighton’s attacking options already contain several question marks heading into the new campaign. Georginio Rutter failed to consistently deliver last season, while highly-rated youngster Charalampos Kostoulas has yet to prove himself in English football. Meanwhile, both Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson are continuing their recoveries from knee and ankle injuries respectively, with Ferguson’s long-term future at the club still uncertain.
Considering Brighton will also have the added challenge of balancing Premier League commitments with Conference League football, strengthening their forward line should be one of the club’s highest priorities before the transfer window closes.
Delap would arrive with a point to prove after a disappointing spell at Stamford Bridge and could thrive in Brighton’s player-focused environment, where several young talents have rebuilt their confidence and developed into top-level performers.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber recently joked that Chelsea have become the club’s “best customers.” If Welbeck ultimately makes the move to Stamford Bridge, perhaps this summer offers Brighton the perfect opportunity to reverse the trend and benefit from Chelsea’s squad for a change by bringing Liam Delap to the south coast.
