Millwall are preparing for another Championship campaign with growing optimism after an impressive season that saw them come agonisingly close to reaching the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history.

The Lions narrowly missed out on a place in the play-off final after suffering defeat to Hull City in the semi-finals, but their performances throughout the regular season gave supporters plenty of reasons to believe Alex Neil’s side can challenge again in 2026/27.

Having established themselves as genuine promotion contenders, Millwall are expected to strengthen further before the new season begins. Neil has already overseen the arrivals of Elkan Baggott, Mark Sykes, Tairyk Arconte and Mathis Servais as he continues reshaping his squad with the aim of mounting another top-six challenge.

Despite those additions, one area still requires attention. The departure of Thierno Ballo following the end of his loan spell has left Millwall short of options on the left wing, making that position one of the club’s biggest priorities during the remainder of the transfer window.

Samuel Edozie could be the ideal solution

One player who could provide the answer is Southampton winger Samuel Edozie. The 23-year-old has struggled for consistent opportunities at St Mary’s and may benefit from a move where he can play regular first-team football.

Edozie began his career in Manchester City’s academy and made his only senior appearance for the Premier League champions in the 2021 Community Shield against Leicester City before securing a permanent move to Southampton in 2022 on a five-year contract.

His first spell with the Saints proved encouraging. During the 2023/24 Championship season, he featured 36 times across all competitions and played his part as Southampton secured an immediate return to the Premier League.

Since then, however, his involvement has declined significantly. Throughout the 2025/26 campaign, Edozie made 18 appearances in all competitions, but only two of those came as Championship starts. His limited opportunities suggest he is no longer a major part of manager Tonda Eckert’s long-term plans.

A fresh start could revive his career

With regular football becoming increasingly difficult to find, a loan move could represent the perfect opportunity for both Southampton and the player. Millwall would be acquiring a talented winger eager to prove himself, while Edozie would gain the consistent playing time needed to rediscover his best form.

At just 23 years old, the winger still possesses considerable potential. He has already demonstrated that he has the technical quality to thrive in the Championship and remains capable of becoming one of the division’s most dangerous wide players.

Known for his pace, close control and confidence in one-on-one situations, Edozie regularly causes problems for opposing full-backs. His dribbling ability and composure in possession allow him to stretch defences and create attacking opportunities, qualities that would fit well into Alex Neil’s style of play.

Edozie would strengthen Millwall’s attacking options

Bringing Edozie to The Den would provide Millwall with valuable depth and versatility in wide areas. He is capable of operating on either flank, giving Neil greater tactical flexibility throughout a demanding Championship season.

Although highly-rated youngster Kyrell Lisbie is expected to join the club, uncertainty continues to surround the future of Azeez, who has reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League clubs. Should Azeez depart, Millwall would need another proven winger capable of making an immediate impact.

With Ballo having already returned to Saint-Étienne after his loan spell, reinforcing the left wing has become increasingly important. Edozie appears to be a player with both the talent and motivation to fill that gap while offering room for further development.

Millwall begin their 2026/27 Championship campaign with a challenging opening fixture against Bristol City on Saturday, August 15. If Alex Neil can strengthen his squad further before then—particularly by securing a player of Edozie’s calibre—the Lions could be well equipped to launch another serious push for promotion.
