Portsmouth Prepare for Multiple Summer Departures as Transfer Activity Intensifies

Portsmouth are expected to oversee a significant number of departures from Fratton Park during the current summer transfer window, with Sporting Director Rich Hughes confirming that several clubs have already submitted serious offers for players who are no longer considered central to the club’s plans.

Following the recent arrivals of Odin Bailey and Eoin Kenny, Portsmouth’s senior squad has grown to 31 first-team players, leaving the club with an oversized squad that must be trimmed before additional signings can be completed. Head coach John Mousinho and Hughes are now working together to reshape the squad, with both incoming and outgoing transfers forming a major part of their summer strategy.

Among the players most likely to leave are Jacob Farrell and Ibane Bowat, who are currently expected to move on either through permanent transfers or loan deals. In addition, the futures of Josh Knight, Luke Le Roux, Makenzie Kirk and Harvey Blair remain uncertain as the club continues evaluating its options. Portsmouth hope to free enough squad space and wage capacity to bring in as many as six further additions before the transfer window closes.

Despite the scale of the rebuilding process, Hughes insists the club remains calm and confident about the situation. Speaking about the ongoing transfer business, he revealed that Portsmouth have already received genuine interest from other clubs, including several firm transfer offers for players who are available to leave. According to Hughes, discussions are progressing positively and he expects a number of deals to be completed over the coming weeks.

He explained that both he and John Mousinho have maintained the same message throughout the summer—that player departures are an expected part of the club’s plans. While Portsmouth continue searching for new signings, they are also working closely with players whose futures lie elsewhere, helping them assess potential opportunities and determine the best next step in their careers.

Hughes acknowledged that the final decision ultimately rests with the individual players, who must hold discussions with interested clubs before agreeing to any move. He stressed that Portsmouth’s responsibility is to ensure players have the necessary opportunities available while respecting the transfer process, which often involves lengthy negotiations and careful planning from all parties involved.

The Sporting Director also noted that transfer negotiations are rarely straightforward. Just as Portsmouth invest considerable time and effort when pursuing new players, other clubs must also complete their own recruitment processes, making patience an essential part of the transfer window.

Portsmouth’s pre-season training camp in the Republic of Ireland has provided an ideal environment for transfer planning. Hughes has travelled with the squad, allowing him to work closely alongside head coach John Mousinho throughout the week. The pair spend long hours together each day discussing recruitment plans, outgoing transfers and the overall direction of the squad.

According to Hughes, their close working relationship has proved extremely beneficial, particularly during such a busy transfer period. With both decision-makers based in the same location, they can react quickly to developments and maintain constant communication regarding negotiations. He suggested that other clubs may find this more difficult if key staff members are based in different countries during pre-season.

While transfer discussions continue behind the scenes, Hughes confirmed that several players have already been informed that their opportunities at Portsmouth will likely be limited next season. Rather than remaining at the club with restricted playing time, those individuals have been encouraged to explore alternative opportunities where they can enjoy more regular football and continue their development.

As the transfer window progresses, Portsmouth expect movement in both directions, with further signings anticipated alongside multiple departures. Club officials believe this balanced approach will allow Mousinho to assemble a more competitive, streamlined squad capable of meeting the challenges of the upcoming campaign.
