The two essential signings Portsmouth need – and they’re already at Fratton Park

As Portsmouth F.C. prepare to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window, the club still have important unfinished business behind the scenes.

Two key first-team players remain out of contract, with both expected to play major roles in John Mousinho’s plans for the 2026-27 season if new agreements can be reached.

One of those is Connor Ogilvie, currently Pompey’s longest-serving player and effectively the club’s only recognised left-back — an area the squad still needs to reinforce.

Meanwhile, Zak Swanson is negotiating after arguably enjoying his best campaign for the Blues since arriving shortly after Marlon Pack in the summer of 2022. The defender’s performances last season suggested his career is finally beginning to hit new heights.

As free agents, both players are free to consider offers from elsewhere, but Portsmouth remain optimistic that the duo will stay at Fratton Park despite negotiations now stretching into a seventh week.

Speaking about the situation, Mousinho acknowledged that quality players naturally attract interest, especially when they are available on free transfers. However, he stressed the club are hopeful agreements can still be reached, reflected in the contract offers already presented to both players.

Ogilvie last signed a new Pompey deal in June 2024 following the club’s League One title-winning campaign and return to the Championship. Although he had never previously played above League One level, the 30-year-old has since established himself as a dependable Championship performer after overcoming an initially difficult adjustment period.

Now approaching 200 appearances for Portsmouth, Ogilvie has firmly held onto the left-back role, keeping competition such as Jack Sparkes and Jacob Farrell out of the side in recent seasons.
