On this day in 2001, Portsmouth completed the signing of Peter Crouch from QPR in a deal worth £1.5 million, marking the beginning of a journey that would shape one of English football’s most memorable strikers. Before arriving at Fratton Park, Crouch had failed to make a senior appearance for Tottenham Hotspur and gained valuable experience on loan with Dulwich Hamlet and Swedish side IFK Hässleholm before moving permanently to Queens Park Rangers in 2000.
It was at Portsmouth that the towering forward truly announced himself, showcasing his goalscoring ability and laying the foundation for an outstanding career. Crouch would go on to represent 11 professional clubs, enjoying particularly successful spells with Liverpool and Stoke City. On the international stage, he became a fan favourite for England, scoring an impressive 22 goals in 42 appearances. Portsmouth supporters will always remember the club’s role in launching the career of one of England’s most iconic modern forwards.
